Probiotics

What are Probiotics and how do they work?

Almost everyone knows that Doctors and Veterinarians use antibiotics to fight bacterial diseases. Antibiotics kill disease-causing bacteria. Unfortunately they also can kill off beneficial bacteria needed for digesting food. That is why digestive tract disorders often accompany an antibiotic treatment. Probiotics can accomplish the same results without harming beneficial bacteria and without causing the resulting digestion problems.

The concept is rather simple once you understand it. There is a limited amount of surface area in the digestive system that is available for bacterial growth. Both beneficial and harmful bacteria co-exist in the intestines of all animals. In healthy animals these two basic types of bacteria arein balance. When an animal is stressed or exposed to excess harmful bacteria, the system becomes unbalanced. Harmful bacteria take over and the animal becomes ill.

As an example imagine a dry sponge. Take the dry sponge and soak it in a bowl of water. It will absorb water until it is saturated. When you lift up the soaked sponge, the excess water runs off. If you move the soaked sponge into another bowl of water, it will not absorb any additional water because there just isn’t any more room. The intestinal tract acts in a similar way.

If the digestive tract is full of beneficial bacteria, there just isn’t room for harmful ones. Probiotic treatment is simply providing additional beneficial bacteria so that the surface area in the intestine that is available for bacterial growth is flooded with the beneficial bacteria. When beneficial bacteria occupy all available space, the harmful bacteria have nowhere to attach and grow. They therefore pass through the system and are expelled as waste.

Probiotic treatment is especially helpful during times of stress like breeding, showing, and molting. Use of probiotics can also be helpful as a follow up to antibiotic treatment. After an antibiotic treatment, probiotics help to quickly re-establish the beneficial bacterial cultures that are destroyed by the antibiotics.

Avi-Culture is a probiotic consisting of live beneficial bacteria necessary for proper food digestion. Avi-culture contains Lactobacillus acidophilus, Lactobacillus casei, Bifido bacterium bifidium, and Streptococccus faecium.

Quikon Med acts in a similar fashion that can be used in conjunction with probiotic treatment to further improve the auto-immune system. Med naturally kills off many harmful bacteria, protozoa, parasites, and fungi. The Med and probiotic work together to remove harmful bacteria while increasing beneficial bacteria.

WHAT IS AVI-CULTURE™?

AVI-CULTURE™ is a Live Probiotic that was specifically developed for birds!

AVI-CULTURE™ offers aviculturists, vets, zoo curators, and pet owners the finest Probiotic on the market with bacterial counts of over 100 million living organisms for the avian intestine per gram! It is more effective than most other probiotic products on the market today!

AVI-CULTURE™ is produced using proven, field-tested microorganisms that have been shown to implant on the villi of the intestinal tract in birds: Lacto-bacillus acidophilus, produces lactic acid and the enzyme amylase during the growth phase of birds; Lactobacillus casei enjoys a wide temperature and pH range during growth and complements L. acidophilus producing lactic acid and amylase in birds; Bifidobacterium bifidium, a delicate microorganism found in mother's milk and human, animal and bird intestines; Enterococcus faecium for lactic acid production in pH ranges of birds similar to L. casei.

AVI-CULTURE™ should be used after any antibiotic treatment of birds, or on  stressed or sick birds, birds that are“going light”, before, during & after the breeding season, before, during and after the molt, during shipping or exhibiting all birds, for “plugged or pasted-up vents", and to develop an immunity from pathogens in all birds

Quikon Med is an all natural herbal remedy for negative bacteria, coccidia, strep, parasites and fungus. It is made from highlly concentrated oregano. It is available in powder, or the new liquid form.

Quikon Med-The Magic Solution!

Many health problems with birds have to do with digestive tract disorders. Things like fungus, protozoa, parasites and negative gram bacteria can very rapidly bring a bird down. Simple basic hygiene and husbandry practices in the aviary greatly reduce the opportunity for these to become established in the flock. However, even the most fastidious breeders can some times face a situation that requires additional action. Many times the first reaction is to use broad spectrum antibiotics.

Unfortunately the use of antibiotics kill beneficial bacteria as well as the offensive ones. Killing off the necessary beneficial gut bacteria presents even more problems because the immune system is depressed. Anyone who has ever suffered through the aftermath of a heavy dose of antibiotics can attest to the stomach cramps and resultant digestive problems.

Quikon Med is an effective all-natural alternative. It is not a drug. It is super concentrated oregano which has proven effective in treating digestive tract disorder. To treat an existing problem add 3 grams of Med ( an appropriate size scoop is included) to 1 kilogram of egg-food. Feed this mixture for five days. Repeat this 5-day treatment in one month. After that a prophylactic treatment of one day every 6-8 weeks is appropriate.

New birds should be quarantined and treated with Med for 5 days prior to being added to the flock. A one to 5 day treatment of the entire flock at the time of introduction of the new birds is a sensible preventative measure.

Because Med does not affect beneficial bacteria, it can be used in conjunction with probiotics (Avi-Culture.) This serves the dual purpose of removing the negative bacteria while gut-loading beneficial bacteria at the same
