Preparing Egg-food
for parrots
Canary breeders have used egg-foods to supplement seed diets for
generations. Finch keepers have also embraced this high protein
supplement. People who keep and raise parrots have been less
inclined to use this fabulous addition to their pet’s diets. The
main complaint that we hear from parrot people is that their birds
don’t eat the egg-food. Invariably when we ask for more details, we
find that the egg-food just isn’t being offered in a form that is
attractive to larger hook-bills. At Orchid Tree Exotics Aviary we
regularly feed egg-food to our hook-bills with great success. Our
birds actually eat the egg-food before they touch their seed and
pellet diet. The secret is all in the way we prepare the
egg-food.
Here’s our recipe for parrot egg-food;
1 sixteen ounce package of dried northern beans. 1 sixteen ounce package of dried pinto beans. 1 sixteen ounce package of dried garbanzo beans. Two medium sized sweet potatoes. 1 package of frozen corn nibblets. 1 package of macaroni or other shaped pasta. 1 tablespoon Quiko Spirulina 1 teaspoon Quiko Med. 2 one kg Quiko Psitta 1 cup Quiko Carrots
Soak the dried beans over night until they absorb water and swell.
Rinse, drain and refill the pan with water. Bring the water to a
rolling boil. Boil the beans until they are soft, but firm; almost
a little bit crunchy. Boil the sweet potatoes until they are easily
pierced with a fork, but still firm. Drain the sweet potatoes and
allow them to cool. Cut the sweet potatoes into ½ inch cubes. Boil
the pasta until it is “al-dente”, drain and cool.
Place the Quiko Carrots in a large mixing bowl and add enough
water to “float” them. Allow the carrot pellets to soak for at
least one half hour until they crumble completely. Stir the
Spirulina, Psitta and the Med into the carrot crumbles.
Combine all the remaining ingredients and add to the
egg-food/Carrots. Stir thoroughly and place the completed mixture
in zipper lock freezer bags. These bags can be frozen for future
use and thawed as needed. Once thawed, they can be refrigerated for
up to one week.
Add a tablespoon or two per bird over the top of the seed diet
each day. Try it; your birds will love it.
