Wild Life Rehabilitators

Wildlife rehabilitators are very special people. They devote a large portion of their personal lives to the protection, survival and reintroduction of our native wildlife.I've known a number of these generous caring people and have always been impressed by their drive to "do something to make a difference." They don't do it for financial gain; most of them take money from their own pockets to pay for the supplies they need to help the injured and orphaned animals in their care to return to their homes in the wild. Very few of them have outside funding from governmental agencies or private non-profit organizations.

Having raised many infant birds, small animals and orphan puppies and kittens to healthy adulthood I realize the drain that this effort can make on a person financially and emotionally. For this reason Orchd Tree Exotics offers a special pricing structure to licensed wildlife rehabers on the products that we carry that they can use.In some small way, I hope that this helps in their efforts.

Licensed Rehabers recieve a 20% discount on all Orchid Tree Exotics orders for use in their rehabilitation efforts.

Quiko Nectar is designed for use with sunbirds, honeycreepers and HUMINGBIRDS! This great product contains no soy protein so is safe for use with infant hummers. Less than 20ppm of iron. We have had great response from hummingbird rehabbers who use this product. (Actually I can hardly imagine the effort it takes to hand feed a bird this tiny; it must be like trying to hand feed a bumble bee!

Orchid Tree Exotics Aviary Omnivore Softbill Recipe

Orchid Tree Exotics Aviary works with a variety of softbills: herbivores, insectivores and omnivores. Because of this we are listed on a couple of softbill lists on the internet and frequently receive calls about care and feeding of birds that fall into this category. Many of these calls are from wildlife rehabilitators and the occasional Good Samaritan who has rescued an orphaned European Starling. We don’t recommend that the average person try to “rescue” wild birds; it is hard work, has a fairly low success rate and in the case of native songbirds it is illegal. The two exceptions are European Starlings and House Sparrows because these species are introduced non-native species. As such they are not covered by US Fish and Wildlife regulation. That being said we realize that some people will try to raise these foundlings anyways. So rather than having folks try to keep these birds alive using methods that are bound to fail we’d like to offer a tried and true diet that we use in the aviary that will work on Starlings and other omnivores. The recipe below is what we use for our omnivore softbills in the aviary.

Fruit/Omnivore mix

¼ cup Iams Mini-Chunks Dog food soaked in water until soft
¼ cup Orchid Tree Exotics Softbill Formula*.
½ Banana, peeled and chopped
½ kiwi, peeled and chopped or ¼ apple chopped
4-5 grapes chopped
2-3 tablespoons frozen peas & carrot
5-6 tablespoons of Quiko Goldy.

Once dog food has absorbed the water mix all ingredients in a bowl and refrigerate until ready to use.

Sprinkle 4-6 mealworms before serving the food each day.

Hint:
Start out feeding about 6 tablespoons of the mix a day to see how much mix the bird will eat each day. If it completely empties the dish, increase the amount fed. If there are left-overs, decrease the amount until you determine the right amount.

You can also leave a separate dish of dry Goldy in the cage at all times to supplement the diet.
