Confused about converting Metric
to US measurements? |
|
What the Heck is a milliliter and how the Heck do I find one? Just about everyone knows that the United States has used Standard English measuring units for years while virtually the rest of the world uses the Metric System. This brings about confusion when you are faced with figuring correct proportions when adding vitamins, medicines, or mixing egg-food because we Yanks think in terms of ounces, pounds, cups, quarts and gallons. The rest of the world thinks in grams, kilograms, milliliters and liters. We constantly hear comments like “6 kilograms? How many pounds is that?” or “The instructions say mix 5ml with one liter of water. How many teaspoons is that per gallon?” We offer the following tables to try to help clear up the confusion. Liquid Measures | US Standard | US Standard | Metric | Metric | | 1 Teaspoon | 3/16 oz. | 5 Milliliters | | | 3 Teaspoons | 1 Tablespoon (½ oz.) | 15 Milliliters | | | 4 Tablespoons | ¼ Cup (2 oz.) | 60 Milliliters | | | 1 Cup | 8 oz | 240 Milliliters | | | 2 Cups | 1 Pint (16 oz.) | 480 Milliliters | Approx. ½ Liter | | 2 Pints | 1 Quart (32 oz.) | 960 Milliliters | Approx. 1 Liter | | 4 Quarts | 1 Gallon (128 oz.) | 3840 Milliliters | Approx. 4 Liters |
Okay let’s try a little exercise. The instructions on the Davinova Liquid Calcium Supplement says add 5ml of the supplement to 1 liter of drinking water. The chart above shows that 5 Milliliters is equal to one Teaspoon. It also shows that one Liter is approximately equal to one US Quart. So add one Teaspoon of Davinova to one Quart of drinking water. You have a lot of birds. One Quart of water won’t go very far, so you want to use a gallon container. Adding one Teaspoon per Quart means that you’ll need to add 4 Teaspoons of supplement per gallon since 4 Quarts equals one gallon. Solid Measure by weight | US Standard | US Standard | Metric | Metric | | 1 Ounce | | 28.4 grams | | | 16 Ounces | 1 Pound | 455 grams | Approx. ½ Kilogram | | 35.2 Ounces | 2.2 Pounds | 1000 grams | 1 Kilogram | | 211.2 Ounces | 13.2 Pounds | 6000 grams | 6 Kilogram |
How about another exercise? You’ve been to the page that explains feeding egg-food on our web-site. It says to moisten Rusk and mix it with the dry egg-food in a four parts egg-food to one part Rusk. You purchased a 1 Kilogram box of Classic egg-food and a 400 gram poly bag of Rusk. That means that the proper proportion of the mix is 4-250 gram portions of Classic need to be mixed with 1-250 gram portion of Rusk. So you soak approximately ½ of the bag of Rusk in water and mix it with the dry egg-food. Now suppose that you also want to add Quikon V liquid vitamin to the food. You’ve discovered that ½ the bag of Rusk will completely absorb one pint of water. The Quikon V instructions say to add 5ml. of vitamin to one pint of water. Looking at the top chart you’ll see that 1 Teaspoon equals 5 Milliliters so you add 1 Teaspoon of vitamin to 1 Pint of water. Now you soak the half bag of Rusk in the vitamin enriched water and mix it with the 1 Kilogram of Classic. You now have vitamin enriched egg-food that your birds will love.
