The Aviary

Orchid Tree Exotics is a M.A.P.(Model Aviculture Program)certified aviary located in Northwest Ohio. The current building was constructed in 1996. This building is a 30' x 40' insulated steel pole building with a shingled roof and concrete floor. It is heated by a forced air furnace and has a full kitchen area for food preparation. Parrots are housed in 3' x 6' x 6' suspended wire cages. Softbills are housed in flights that are either 3' or 5' wide by 10' long and 10' tall. The frames of these flights are painted 2" x 4" with nylon woven mesh covering.

Parrots are fed a mixture of seed, grain, nuts, pellets, eggfood, fresh fruits, and vegetables. A bean, pasta, and vegetable mix is added during breeding season.

Softbills are fed one of two different mixes, depending upon the species. Low-iron softbill pellets are the foundation of both these mixes. Fresh fruits and vegetables are added to the mix for insectivores and herbivores. Soaked-dry dog food and beef heart are added to the mix for omnivores. Mice and mealworms are added to the diets of some species.

Below are some of the more unusual softbills at Orchid Tree Exotics Aviary.
